Today I am reviewing the No7 Beautifully Matte primer as my skin is doing a full circle at the moment and going back to its oily ways. I’ve never used matte foundation on myself until now and although it’s OK every now and then I still prefer the look of dewy highlighted skin. To achieve this I needed a mattifying primer so that I can use my usual liquid foundation without looking like I have a face like an oil slick.
I purchased this primer on a recent shopping trip after testing it out on my hand. Now PLEASE NOTE – this is not the best way to test things, ideally you want to test things on the area you will be using it but being a makeup artist I am constantly testing makeup and can often judge products by texture and consistency and make a decision whether it seems good or not. Not that you may not be but if you don’t use lots of products on a regular basis it’s difficult to compare to other brands/products you previously used.
Having read lots of reviews I can see that this seems to be an issue for many, yes the texture is thick but that is the nature of the product. These pore refining and mattifying products are designed to be thicker to create a smooth base. This is not a hydrating primer so won’t feel silky soft, it does have a slightly chalky feel but that to me is normal. If you pile this one it will stick and feel like it’s rolling on the skin. As with most beauty and makeup products use small amounts and build up. Also only use this on the oily areas that need matting down, I’m confused as to why people are buying a mattifying primer and saying it is too dry for their normal/dry skin. Think about the products you buy!
It comes out white but smoothes translucent, I have pale skin so this may be a little different if you have a darker skin but it definitely shouldn’t look chalky white. If you find this you’ve used too much, remove it all then apply again in a thin layer. A tiny dot is all I use.
I have to say I was impressed the moment I tried this in store which is why I purchased it, it matted instantly and gave skin a smother more refined appearance. It has good staying power and keeps shine to a minimum but don’t expect miracles. I did wedding makeup Sunday, it was hot and clammy and to add to this mix I carried my suitcase of makeup up and down 6 flights of stairs so it was only fair that I looked a hot mess by the end of the day. I dread to think what I would have looked like without this and I must also mention I hadn’t used powder.
If you’re very oily you need a complete skincare and foundation range to suit you. You can’t rely on a primer soley and continue with a creamy or liquid foundation. I would recommend a good skincare routine and a matte primer and matte foundation then use blotting papers or powders during the day. I tend to advise people not to keep applying layer after layer of normal powder as it creates a cakey layer that then mixes with the oil.
This is me, I have normal skin type on the cheeks so do not need to use this all over my face. I just use this where I want to keep shine at bay. It does have a slightly dry texture so I can only imagine how awful it would sit on dry skin or even normal skin with not much oil i.e my cheeks.
Use thin layers, dot a tiny amount onto the forehead one down the nose and one on the chin, if you start to see oil blot.
I’ve had mine on for around 12 hours today and even though I’ve ran loads of errands and filmed a video under warm lighting my chin has no oil although my forehead feels slightly oily to touch, I’m happy with that though as I used MAC face and body today and forgot to powder over the top so a little oil is more than acceptable.
The Power Points
- “No7 Beautifully Matte Make up Base 40ml contains oil absorbing Biopol which helps minimise blemishes and blot away shine without blocking pores.
- This Matte base has light-reflecting particles which help disguise fine lines and flaws.
- This No7 make-up base contains Watermelon and Cucumber extracts to help soothe and cool your skin.”
- Salicylic acid is used for its anti-inflammatory effects and antiseptic properties to prevent blemishes (perfect for oily blemish prone skin!)
This may not suit everyone, the only thing I can advise is purchase products wisely and build thin layers.
